Photo Number 861

This week we will look at some photos of men, some have names and some do not. This is a CdV from the first Antique Shop in Dorset Minnesota.

A young man..perhaps 14 or 15 years old.
W Dahl CdV Dorset 1 back
Rev. ??  W. B. Dahl
I was unable to find anything out about the photographer J. G. Grossfield.

I suspect that the photo was taken sometime in the 1880’s.  Pink was a common card color used during the 1880’s and later.

I am back at work this week.  I will update info either early in the morning or in the evening.

Thanks for stopping by, do come again:)

Update from Anonymous:
Wilhelm Bull Dahl "Born in Gården Sentvet, Trøgstad, Østfold, Norway on 23 Aug 1864 to Ole Halvorsen Dahl and Johanna Wilhelmsdtr Bull. Wilhelm Bull married Ellen Eriksdtr Heien and had 10 children. He passed away on 8 Feb 1932 in Dwight, Richland, North Dakota, USA."

Trøgstad is south-east of Oslo, close to the Swedish border.

Wilhelm B. Dahl left Norway April 29 (!) 1870, together with parents Ole Halvorsen Dahl (Carpenter) and Johanne Wilhelmsdatter, children Augusta (7), Wilhelm (5) and Torvald.

In 1880 they live in New Prairie, Hope, Minnesota. Additional siblings Tilda, Johny and Hilmar.

He most likely was the Pastor at St John's Lutheran Church rural Richland County North Dakota. from 1912 to 1916.

Update from Iggy:
Wilhelm, born in Norway, and Ellen Dahl are shown living in Sparta, MN in 1900. The US census of that date shows his occupation as Clergy, https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/M9S9-DKJ

I think Anonymous has the right man. I'm not sure how/why the photo from Coon Prairie, Wisconsin... However Coon Praire is one of the earliest and most famous Norwegian settlements in the Midwest.

Rev. W. B. Dahl 1864 to 1932 is buried in Faith Lutheran Cemetery Richland County ND.  Ellen Dahl 1866-1940 is also buried there.  Faith Lutheran Cemetery was formerly known as the Dwight Cemetery.

This is a photo from the antique shop in Park Rapids.

Two children PR Raven Studio Wadena

This photo is in a folder.  The photographer was Raven from Wadena Minnesota.  He was a photographer there off and on from 1912 to 1922.

The little guy on the left might be a boy, his hair is parted on the side.  The other child..who knows.. it could be either a boy or a girl.

I am curious about the bar pin that both are wearing.  I have seen it in photographs before, do you know anything about its origin or significance?

Children had to hold very still for the photographer..you can see one fuzzy foot on the toddler!

Twins maybe with one of their husbands 001

Julius Tessman from Wadena was the photographer most likely in the year 1914. He was not in Wadena very long.

It looks like Twin Sisters to me..but they could be triplets…or perhaps just brother and sisters.  They all have a bit of fru fru on their clothing.  I am not quite sure of what to call it..it was some kind of a decoration.

Gladys and Esther Strawrey? Edited to Stranney

This is a Velox Card that was used between 1909 and 1914.

Thanks for stopping by, do come again:)
Update: From grandmavickieann
The 1920 US Census finds Gladys and Esther Stranney, who were born about 1913 in SD, living in Indian Lake, Nobles, MN, with parents Peter and Stella, and siblings Doris and Pharos. Peter, born in SD, managed a cream station. Stella was born in ND.

Update from Iggy:
And in 1930's US census, the twins are 17 years old and in Lakefield, Jackson, Minnesota - which is close to where one of the last set of named twins (photo 849) lived.

Gladys E. Stranney, born 7 April 1912 passed away on 20 April 1993 in Rock county, Wisconsin.

It appears that most of the family moved to Alma Center, Wisconsin around 1940. Father Peter died there in November 1944 at the age of 63. Sister Carol was a frequent singer in their church, listed many times as singing songs for other poeple's funerals. Pharos Stranney, was also called Pete, and he died in Milwaukee (Waukesha), WI in 1999.

I can't tell is Gladys ever married but am leaning toward "not", she passed away in Beloit, WI.

I don't know what became of Stella or Esther. Given social security records started being created and handed out in late 1937-1938, it is very possible Esther was already married, being about 26 years old by then and registered under her, unknown to me, married name.

Postcard Ella and Emma Hueringveld Twins DL Antiques back
Ella and Emma Hueringveld in SC  Twins
This old Cyko Postcard is from 1904 to 1920. I will guess since their blouses are a bit pigeon breasted  that this photograph was taken between 1904 and 1910.

Thanks for stopping by, do come again:)

Update: From Iggy
"SC" stands for Sioux Center, a city in Sioux County, Iowa. I believe the name is spelled HEUSINKVELD.

Emma and Ella were born May 1895 to Herman and Jacoba.

The spelling of the last name varies all over the place.

Emma, Mrs. H. Sneiders of Edgerton, Minn
Ella, Mrs. John Bierma, Sioux Center

In 1930, Emma is in MN with husband Henry and brother Harvey.

This time the names are spelled Synder and Hausinhold!

Full Circle 53

This Full Circle began with Tulla, clearing out some old photos she had purchased in an Antique Shop.   She mailed me the photos.  I featured the photo.  Abra left a message on Ancestry for a family tree holder.

Harold and Hazel from Tulla

Harold and Hazel Hamm  Photo Number 726

I heard from Jeff.

Hi, I am Jeff----  Abra on Ancestry.com Emailed me the end of last year about your photo.
The places and names fit my family and origin. Harold Hamm would have been my great grandfather, he died the year before I was born.
I talked to my grandfather, now 87 years old, and he had an Aunt Hazel, But unfortunately, she's been gone a long time too.
I had some family show Grandpa the photo, and he said it looks similar to one he had seen before, and followed with a comment about his memory and that he could just have the memory of some other photo.
I really suspect that this would be a photo of my great grandfather as a child, as the info fits pretty perfectly, but I am afraid that anyone that would be able to verify it 100 percent is probably gone.
Thanks for posting the picture, it is pretty neat what you are doing!
Thank you,

I asked him if he would like to have the photo.

Thank you,
I would love to have it, as I am pretty sure that the picture is my family.
I would be happy to pay you a fair price for the photo or postage if necessary let me know.
Thank you for finding me. Its a pretty neat thing you are doing with the old photos!
Sincerely,
Jeff

I mailed it off.

I got the photo you sent, thank you very much!

Jeff also asked me if I had a paypal account..I do not.  Some people will send a dollar or two for postage..any extra cash that is sent to me I use to rescue more photos with names.   It is all about kindness and sharing and returning the forgottens to family.

Full Circle 52

Today’s Full Circle began with Iggy searching..he found an email address for a relative.

Postcard Rose Gast DL Antiques

Photo Number 839  Rose Gast

The back of of the photo said To Ellfrieda Hingot. edited to (Hingst) from Rose Gast

Hi,

My wife forwarded this email to me. I showed the photo to my father, Rose's last living child and he agreed that it is his mother. He thinks it is likely her confirmation photo and she may have been about age 14. Also he said that he knew the Hingst family as a child, someone may have had trouble reading the writing on the postcard. It is not Hingot as indicated in the blog.

Thanks,

Craig

I mailed the photo off in the mail on April 9, 2012 and last night I got a reply.

Hi Connie, I received the photo today in fine shape. I have attached a photo of my Grandmother taken in 1995 when she was 94. She lived another 3 years however her mind didn't stick with her. What I remember about her is she was very quiet, she always made her own bread, never buying it at the store. And she made great canned cherries. I only got to see her every 2 or 3 years while growing up since our family moved out west.

I have also attached the program from her memorial which is informative.

Thanks for taking the time to research the photo, it was a fun experience.

Sincerely,

Craig

Photo Number 844

This is a Real Photo Postcard from Kathleen.  It is an unknown that was discovered amongst her fathers possessions.

001

A handsome child.  I think it might be a boy..with a fresh haircut and big boy clothing.

This is a Real Photo Postcard and Azo with triangles going up and down so that dates it from 1918 to 1930.  I will guess that this is from 1918 to the early 1920’s. ( My Father in law wore similar clothing..and he was born in 1914.)

Thanks Kathleen for sharing your old photos!

Photo Number 843

This is one of the photos that Kathleen sent me.  Her father Jacob Richter was born in 1898.  He is the Best Man in this wedding photo.  The other people in this photo are unknown.

002

Kathleen thinks that this photo was taken when her father was 18 to 20 years old.   That would date the photo 1916 to 1918.

I see a strong family resemblance between the boys.  Brothers?  Cousins?  This photograph was most likely taken in the Wadena Minnesota area.

Kathleen wrote “My grandparents lived most of their married lives in Wadena, and my grandmother, Magdalena Leifeld Richter was born in New Trier. My father was raised in Wadena, and my parents lived in Wadena for about 8 years before moving to Wisconsin in 1929 or 1930.”

Full Circle 51

This Full Circle began from an email.

Anna Dreis two copy

Photo Number 260

I was led to your blog by a distant cousin, and I spent several hours today looking through all of your photos.

Your photo 260 of Anna Maria Dreis is my 1st cousin once removed. If no one else has requested the photo, I would be delighted to "claim" her. Her mother, Mary Elizabeth Leifeld Bauer was my grandmother's sister.

I have been doing genealogy for over 30 years and have many family books in progress at this time.

I cherish all old photos, and it is so very wonderful that you are adopting all these old photos, and making such efforts to find homes for them....I wish you much success.

I have a few photos from my fathers things that have no names attached...do you accept photos from other people? I can scan them or mail them to you...if you are willing to add them to your lists.

My grandparents lived most of their married lives in Wadena, and my grandmother, Magdalena Leifeld Richter was born in New Trier. My father was raised in Wadena, and my parents lived in Wadena for about 8 years before moving to Wisconsin in 1929 or 1930. I noticed a picture in your old cars section, where there were suitcases strapped on the back of the car, and you made mention of that fact. When my parents moved to Wisconsin, they had 3 children and they strapped their belongings on the back and running boards of their car. My dad tossed out a lit cigarette, and it landed in one of the boxes of pictures and started a fire...they had to stop along the road to put it out!!!! Unfortunately, many of the pictures were destroyed, and that is another reason that old photos are so precious to me.

If you do choose to send me the photo above, I will keep it available in case someone closer in relation would want it, I would be happy to send it to them.

Once again, thank you so much for what you are doing, and I hope to hear from you soon.

Kathleen

I  asked Kathleen about two other photos.

Anna Dreis three copy

Photo Number 261

FRom Barbara Dreis PR

Photo Number 330

Thank you Connie...photo 261 I believe is Anna and her sister Mary, who was about 15 at the time. I have a photo of their mother around the same age, and there is a definite resemblance. Thank you for alerting me to another photo...I do believe this is part of the same family....they had many children, so I would be very happy to have all three of them if you would send them to me, and I will do research on the First Communion picture.

I mailed off the photos..since they were from 2010 I had to really search for the photos.  I told Kathleen that sometimes I get carried away when I look through the many “Forgottens” I have upstairs.

Hi Connie,

I received the three photos last week, and apologize for not acknowledging their receipt right away...I had grandchildren with me, and that doesn't leave a lot of time for my personal things.

Thank you so very much for sending them so quickly...especially when you had to search through so many "orphaned" photos. I am so delighted to be able to add all three of them to my Leifeld family book. Of course, I never knew Anna Marie Bauer Dries, but her aunt, Magdelena Leifeld Richter was my grandmother. I can give you some information about Anna from my research. She was born in Marshan Township, Dakota, MN on 5 Dec 1897 to Mary Elizabeth Leifeld and Peter John Bauer. She was the oldest of 8 children; 5 sisters and 2 brothers. She was raised on a farm and her family moved to Hampton Township in 1902. She moved to Hastings before she married John Frank Dries in Hastings, Dakota MN on 15 Nov 1933. John Dries was the oldest of 11 children...that must have been some great group when the two families met together!!

The second photo I believe is Anna and her sister Mary Ida Bauer...they were just 2 years apart in age.

The third photo is of Barbara Dries, who was a younger sister of John Dries, and eventually would have been Anna's sister-in-law. The photo is inscribed "to Katherine from Barbara Dries". There were several Katherine's in Barbara's life, but as I think her First Communion would have been around 1914-1915, I can't be sure which Katherine it might have been sent to.

As a side note, Barbara never married and died in 1959 and is buried at St. John's cemetery in Vermillion.

A distant cousin, sent me the link to your web site, and I am so grateful to him for sharing this with me. I don't know for sure how he found your site, but as we share the same Leifeld/Richter line, we share anytime we find something that might help us. He is very diligent and I feel so blessed to have him helping me...often finding things I would not have had time to research.

I will be checking back to your web site in the future...maybe you will unearth more of my ancestors! I will be sending the couple of photos I found in my father's things to you this week...and it would be so wonderful if you found a match for them.

Again, thank you so very much for what you are doing...a monumental undertaking, but one that is blessing many people. How wonderful that you have two gracious people who help you research those who have a little bit of information attached..they are special "angels" too.

Keep up the great work you do...and it makes me want to start rescuing those photos I find around my area!!

As ever,

Kathleen

I was thrilled to find a home for these photos and I know Iggy will be too..he looked and looked for a home for these Dries photos.

Tomorrow we will look at the photos that Kathleen sent to me.

Update from Iggy:
Well, sure enough, the rather unique name of Elfreda Hingot appears in the 1930 US census. Born in 1901 and living in Wahpeton, Richland county, North Dakota.

Nicely (and neatly) we find Rose Gast (a not so unique name) in the 1910 US census. Born in 1901, and living in Summit, Richland county, North Dakota.

Rose is the daughter of Fred and Herth Gast and she had at least 7 siblings. In the 1920 US census she is listed as Rosa (and her parents are C Fred and Hatta) and she has another sibling born since 1910.

Rose Martha Christine Gast b: 2/17/1901 d: 5/2/2000 married Alfred C. Koppelman b: 9/6/1898 d: 12/7/1983.

She had four children.

Update From email on April 7, 2012

I heard from a family member that yes this is Rose,  her son thinks she was about 14 years old at the time this photo was taken, and they also think it was a Confirmation photo.    So that dates the year of the photo right around 1915.
I am waiting to hear if they would like the photo mailed out.

Photo Number 836

This week for the week preceding Easter we will look at some religious photo.  Most of which I believe are Confirmation or First Communion photos.  This first photo is from the Antique Shop in Grand Forks North Dakota, my daughter Jen gave me this old photo.
Boy Religious from Jen Grand Forks Antiques
The photographer was Fred Lhotka of Winsted Minn.  I did not have any luck finding any info about this photographer.

I will guess that this photo was taken in the late 1920’s  or 1930’s.  late teen's or early 1920's.  The young man is holding a candle, a prayer book and a rosary and he has a corsage of Lily of the Valley.   He is wearing a fine double breasted suit which fits him perfectly.

Thanks for stopping by, do come again:)

Update from Iggy:
Fred Lhotka was born in Rich Valley Township, Minnesota on May 28, 1881. He worked in Wistad from 1902 to 1922. He also went by Lehika and Lholka. An unusual name in any case. The family was from Tabor, Bohemia (Southwestern Czechoslovakia).
